Smart switches control your lights from your phone, by voice or automatically. There are three types – depending on whether you want to replace the switch, keep the existing one, or add a new one without cutting into the wall.
Three types of smart switches
With or without neutral?
Many smart switches need a neutral wire in the wall box. If you don’t have one, choose a no-neutral model – e.g. the BSEED Zigbee switch (no N) or the SONOFF ZBMINI-L2. Leave the wiring to an electrician.
Zigbee or Wi-Fi?
Zigbee switches are low-power and the network is stable, but they need a Zigbee coordinator or gateway. Wi-Fi models connect straight to your router. Most of them also work with Home Assistant.
